The history of Aceite de Lucena PDO olive oils

A Look Back at History

The area now covered by the Aceite de Lucena PDO formed part of ancient Roman Baetica, one of the Roman Empire’s leading olive oil producing and exporting regions. Thousands of amphorae filled with oil left these lands for Rome, making southern Córdoba one of the Mediterranean’s great olive oil centres.

Its history continued through the Andalusi, Jewish and medieval periods, among others, right up to the present day.

The exceptional adaptation of Hojiblanca to the limestone soils and Mediterranean climate of southern Spain encouraged its spread and established it as one of the most important varieties in Spanish olive growing.
